We're Waitin'

Lovely sloppy, cold, wet Winter weather we're having here in the Mid-Atlantic area. Snow yesterday which then turned to sleet/freezing rain/rain. I believe the popular term for it thses days is "Wintery-mix". Sounds so lyrical and festive, like something you'd make with Chex cereal and serve at a party. Pardon me my dear, could you please pass the bowl of Wintery-mix? In reality it's a pain in the ass to drive in. I'll take straight up snow any day.

Schools were closed. My place of employment delayed opening for two hours, which of course meant I'd get there in about three and a half. Hey, I don't rush. Especially on ice. Once I got past the sheet of solid ice that was my driveway, the drive in wasn't as bad as expected. Mostly rain. While driving I was listening to the radio, mainly for traffic and weather info. This song by John Mayer came on that I hadn't heard before and caught my ear. Ya'll may know it but I didn't and I thought I'd share.

Yeah, we're waitin'. It made me think. How come the extremist nut-jobs on both ends of the spectrum always seem to be so well organized and influential? And they seem to be the ones the political candidates most worry about getting support from. Isn't it time we had an influential, extremely vocal coalition of middle-of-the-road, rational people who don't insist on making meddling in other people's lives their life's work? We could call it the "Live and Let Live Society". Or the "Golden Rule Coalition". How about the "I'll Mind My Fucking Business and You Mind Yours Association"? Imagine if the candidates worried about pandering to THAT group.

I think Richard Nixon's boys coined the term "silent majority." We're still here, and we're still silent. Too silent.

Honestly, I think if we spoke up, America would be a much better place to live.

Mike has a good point...at my job we have to politically active to make change for our population. However, I cannot tell you how many people call us and are just to damn lazy to do a damn thing on their own. They keep waiting for someone else to do it for them. So until the "silent majority" has a fire set under their ass, things will continue to go to those who make the most noise.

Besides, you don't expect the government to do the right thing, just because it's the right thing do you? I mean that would make SENSE and that is something no governemnt official would be caught dead doing...making sense that is.

In my job with safety & health I've at times had to deal with hazard communication which sometimes moves far too quickly into outrage control (picture angry parents with torches and pitchforks at a school board meeting convinced their children have been exposed to something). I've interacted with the guy who is considered the expert in the field of this type of communication. He is fond of saying that the general attitude of the Anerican population is apathy - they are VERY hard to get off the couch and away from the TV...BUT, once they do get up it is VERY difficult to get them to sit back down. wht the hell is it going to take for us all to get up - all at once?

You got yourself a member here Bruce. I'm over in the UK so I don't suppose it would make much difference, but we could do with a party like that here too. x

Pitchforks and torches.

Funny you say that, I use that analogy frequently when annoyed at someone...usually a political figure. I figure there has to be some merit to the "old ways" of doing business.

Kitty, I see no reason to restrict it to the US. I think we should go global!

MI, "the old ways". I like the sound of that. Send word out to my thegns to assemble the fyrd.

From one who knows, it's a hell of lot easier to be a single issue nut job than a rational person who tries to wend through all of the issues that arise.

Everybody is too busy with jobs and watching "American Idol" to put in the time it takes to be informed, come to a reasonable position, and fight for it.

I'm all for it if you can form such a group.

American Idol is on in 4 minutes.....

HM, that's right. Everybody's much too wrapped up in Brittany's latest madcap escapades.
I'll add forming that group to my todo list. Right after I take out the recycling.

MI. You're gonna be put in time out.

Nice music.
Apathy reigns supreme over most of the Western World.

No John Mayer song that I am unfamiliar with. He's my boyfriend.

The more I read your blog and comments, the more I realize that I am providing the much needed role of "inane commentor."

Hey, someone has to do it. I'll volunteer. Because that's the kind of friend I am.

Meggie, unfortunately you are right. About the apathy, not the music.

Biscuit, I appreciate it. And remember, the only inane comment is the comment not made...or something like that.
